Review: Runaways, Vol. 6: Parental Guidance

Very nice! I thought I had a twist figured out, and while I was in the neighborhood I was very wrong in my assumption. I rather enjoy being wrong when a story is as well written as this one proved to be. Happily they seem to have sacked the artist that I disliked so much from the prior volume and the artwork is back to normal. Some very good writing in this volume, and now it is time for me to pick up the next volume and move on with the story.

Not bad. The writing is getting smoother and the story gets more and more believable. I only wish I already had the next volume ready at hand rather than waiting to be picked up at the library.

Review: Runaways, Volume 5: Escape to New York

Runaways, Volume 5: Escape to New York
Runaways, Volume 5: Escape to New York by Brian K. Vaughan

I like the change in art style. This feels very Manga, which is something you don’t see very often in American comics. Unfortunately the artwork went down a hole in the final chapter of the volume, and the artist on staff for that chapter may need some psychiatric therapy with what I saw of the work that was presented. Honestly, why do some artists insist on adding their own “flair” to established characters and simply destroying any credibility and respect for the characters that prior artists may have already lent to a project? The quirky, twisty look like this artist used does nothing but drive me away from perfectly good writing. I can only hope that the artist was a one-shot and we have some real talent returning in the next volume. If I wanted to see artwork like this I would watch Nickelodeon. What’s worse is that the writer seems to have fallen down the same hole as the artist in this last chapter. An otherwise excellent volume spoiled by the final chapter which left a very nasty taste in my mouth. I sincerely hope that the next volume improves on this travesty or I may simply stop working my way through the series.

Review: Runaways, Vol. 4: True Believers

This volume had an interesting twist, and a revelation at the end that may change things significantly for the characters in the future. I can’t say that the revelation was unexpected since it has become rather standard fare of late, but it was handled quite well by the writer. The book itself is solid with visiting characters from elsewhere in the Marvel universe, and unlike what has happened in other books with visiting characters this time they were actually treated with respect and seemed to be true to character. More than enough to keep me reading…

Review: Ex Machina: Fact V. Fiction – VOL 03

Ex Machina: Fact V. Fiction - VOL 03
Ex Machina: Fact V. Fiction – VOL 03 by Brian K. Vaughan
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

While Volume 02 trotted right along this one seemed to really drag in some spots. The writing remains solid, and the story is basically well crafted, it just could have used some help with pacing this time around. Onward to the next volume…
