Review: Hawkman: Allies & Enemies

Hawkman: Allies & Enemies
Hawkman: Allies & Enemies by Geoff Johns
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This was a pleasant return to the lives of some often neglected characters in the DC Universe. All to often these characters are relegated to minor character status in team books while the superstars such as Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman steal all the glory while these characters get relegated to grunt status and are left to deal with the riff-raff of the villain world.

I really enjoyed following these characters, and the author (Geoff Johns, why am I not surprised?) did a fantastic job of bringing them to life and making them seem human. This book was really well written and I eagerly anticipate tracking down other volumes in the series in the hopes that they exhibit equal quality.

Review: Superman: Birthright

Superman: Birthright
Superman: Birthright by Mark Waid
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Honestly, my big problem with this book is the artwork. I really prefer a cleaner style, and this style really detracted from my enjoyment of the story. The story itself was yet another retelling of the Superman origin story. Really nothing all that new here, just another writer trying to put their own spin on the character origin. Bleh. If you are going to put your own spin on it please try to make it more interesting. This was simply boring and tired.

Review: Superman: Last Son

Superman: Last Son
Superman: Last Son by Geoff Johns
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Another powerful story out of Geoff Johns. This was a very human story delving deep into some previously unexplored facets of Superman’s life. Very well written, and leaving me heart sore at the end. Fantastic story.

Review: Superman: Sacrifice

Superman: Sacrifice
Superman: Sacrifice by Greg Rucka
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I have mixed feelings about this one. The underlying plot that ties it all together is cohesive and whole, but some of the stories were more than a bit rough around the edges. And don’t let me talk about some of the horrid artwork for part of the arc. It was bad enough that I basically just skimmed that section as I couldn’t bear to stay there long enough to read the story. That said, there were some very nice parts in there, and I finally got the story where Wonder Woman committed murder that I had encountered in the Manhunter books, so that filled in some blanks quite nicely. All in all, while it all made up the story arc, only about 50% of this volume was really Superman and worth reading. The other bits…not so much, and they are what pulled the rating down so low.

Review: Superman (Volume 2): For Tomorrow

Superman (Volume 2): For Tomorrow
Superman (Volume 2): For Tomorrow by Brian Azzarello
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Wow!!! Really, that pretty much says it all. This was probably the best Superman story arc I have ever read. An extremely powerful story told over the course of two volumes with some absolutely astounding artwork. I wasn’t so sure when I read the first volume, and while I enjoyed it I didn’t like the incomplete feeling I had when I finished it. Add this to that story, as was intended all along, and that story is complete. Make the effort to read both volumes and you won’t regret doing so.
