Review: The Dresden Files: Storm Front, Volume 2: Maelstrom

The Dresden Files: Storm Front, Volume 2: Maelstrom
The Dresden Files: Storm Front, Volume 2: Maelstrom by Jim Butcher
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I really enjoyed the story, and the artwork was pleasing to the eye. The story did a great job of sticking to the original source, which doesn’t always happen with adaptations, so this was nice to find. Under normal circumstances I would have probably given it 4 of 5 stars.

The one major shortcoming of the volume to me was that at least 1/3 of the volume was consumed by “sneak peek” sketches for the next volume. This felt like filler used by the publisher to bulk up an otherwise skimpy volume to justify the cover price. The actual story arc content of this volume could have easily been added to the first volume.

Review: Welcome to the Jungle

Welcome to the Jungle
Welcome to the Jungle by Jim Butcher
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I will admit that I skipped the forward and the book description, so when this story seemed new I didn’t immediately realize that it truly was a new story. So, disclaimer, this is a new story that has never appeared in novel format. That aside, this was a very enjoyable read, and had I read it before the first Storm Front book it would have been a great lead-in to the character and the story. As it is, I read this after reading the first Storm Front book so I was rather lost at seeing an apparent introduction to the character. Still, I enjoyed the story, and the artwork complemented it nicely. Definitely worth the read.

Review: The Dresden Files: Storm Front, Volume 1: The Gathering Storm

The Dresden Files: Storm Front, Volume 1: The Gathering Storm

First a disclaimer, at this point in time I have only ever read the first book in this series in novel form. I plan to eventually read the others, but I got distracted by other shiny books coming up from my hold list and…we…you know what happens when you get distracted by new books, right?

Disclaimer aside, my impression is that they actually did a pretty decent job adapting the novel to graphic novel form. Sure there are bits and pieces missing, and a purist could probably tear it apart, but I am not a purist. I look for good, entertaining stories, and that is what I got in this volume. The adaptation was handled pretty well, and the artwork was actually rather nice. On the whole I eagerly await the second part of this story coming up on my hold list, and I have added the other adaptations to my hold list at the library.
