Review: Birds of Prey, Vol. 1: Trouble in Mind

Birds of Prey, Vol. 1: Trouble in Mind
Birds of Prey, Vol. 1: Trouble in Mind by Duane Swierczynski
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Usually these mystery stories are fairly straightforward, and I figure out who the mastermind is without any trouble. Not so this time, and I enjoyed playing the guessing game. Granted, my wife would probably have figured it out a LOT faster, but she wasn’t the one reading this story. 🙂

The writer of this book is doing a great job on the story, and blending together a diverse cast of characters like this is a very interesting experiment that I think is going very well. I am very curious to see how things progress over time with this cast of characters.

Review: Batgirl, Vol. 1: The Darkest Reflection

Batgirl, Vol. 1: The Darkest Reflection
Batgirl, Vol. 1: The Darkest Reflection by Gail Simone
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A very well written story. You don’t often see a hero trying to talk down a villain, or try to understand them psychologically beyond understanding what is necessary to take them down. This hero not only tries to understand the who and the why, but also tries to talk them down rather than beating them down. Very well done, and nicely balanced. There is still action, and there is still drama, and it all blends together quite nicely. I am eager to see more in this series.

Review: Batgirl: Redemption

Batgirl: Redemption
Batgirl: Redemption by Adam Beechen
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I really love a story that lets me get into the head of the hero, to learn what drives them, what motivates them, and the mental process as they work. This book is doing an excellent job of letting me see into this character, watching her evolve as she confronts the ghosts that haunt her and overcomes them. I eagerly anticipate reading the next volume.

Review: Batgirl, Vol. 2: A Knight Alone

An interesting successor for Barbara Gordon. I wasn’t quite sure about her at first, but watching her evolve over the course of the volume she rather grew on me. Looking forward to seeing how the character further develops.
